Best Cocktails for Beginners

Starting your home bar doesn't need to be expensive or complicated. These five cocktails use a handful of affordable bottles and taste great every time.

Aperol Spritz

Three ingredients, zero technique: Aperol, Prosecco, and a splash of soda over ice in a wine glass. It's Italy's most popular aperitif for good reason — it's virtually impossible to get wrong.

Mojito

White rum, lime juice, sugar, fresh mint, and soda. Muddle the mint gently (bruise it, don't shred it), add rum and lime, top with soda. Refreshing and crowd-pleasing.

Whisky Sour

Bourbon, lemon juice, and a little sugar. Shake hard, strain into a glass. Add an egg white before shaking if you want a silky foam on top.

Negroni

Equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth stirred with ice. Garnish with an orange peel. Bitter, beautiful, and almost impossible to make badly.

Moscow Mule

Vodka, fresh lime, and ginger beer over ice in a copper mug. Squeeze in half a lime, add 50ml vodka, fill with ginger beer. Done.
