Some bottles you buy for what is inside. Some you buy for the shelf. 1800 GuachiMonton is firmly both. We tried it, and the orange-cask finish is the kind of thing you keep describing to people who did not ask.

What it tastes like

Rich caramel and toasted oak, then a bright streak of candied orange that runs right through the middle, with a little spice and sandalwood on the finish. It is an añejo with a sunny disposition.

The story

The agave comes from a single estate in the lowlands of the Tequila Valley and is cooked slowly in masonry ovens before being double distilled. The tequila is aged for at least a year in American and French oak, then finished in casks that previously held orange tequila liqueur — that is where the citrus comes from.

The name and the red, trapezoid-shaped ceramic bottle with its round wooden cap honour Los Guachimontones, the ancient circular pyramids near Teuchitlán in Jalisco, built roughly two thousand years ago.

How to drink it

Neat, at room temperature, in a tulip glass or a small tumbler. A single ice cube is allowed. Mixing it would be like using a vintage Ferrari to pop to the shops.

The verdict

It is a limited edition with a price to match, which makes it a special-occasion bottle or a very good present. Because supply is limited, prices vary a lot — check before you buy.
