Padre Azul is the tequila people buy because of the bottle and keep buying because of what is in it. The bottle is a hand-painted ceramic skull. The tequila is smooth, clean and very easy to like. We tried it and the skull is now a permanent resident on the shelf.

What it tastes like

The Blanco is all fresh cooked agave, citrus and a little black pepper — bright and clean. The Reposado rests at least eight months in oak, which rounds it out with vanilla and caramel. The Añejo spends at least 18 months in bourbon barrels and leans into cinnamon, chocolate and toasted nuts.

The story

Padre Azul was launched in 2016 by a group of friends from Germany, France and Austria who fell for Mexico and its tequila. It is made from 100% blue agave in Jalisco, and the skull bottle borrows from Mexican craft-ceramics tradition — every one is finished by hand.

How to drink it

Blanco makes a superb Margarita or Paloma. Reposado and Añejo are sippers: neat or with one big ice cube. And yes, the empty bottle makes an excellent vase, candle holder or conversation starter.

The verdict

A premium tequila that delivers on the drink as well as the looks. It is pricier than everyday tequila, and it is not stocked everywhere, so compare the stores that carry it.

Quick questions

Which Padre Azul should I buy first?
The Blanco if you like cocktails and fresh agave flavour; the Reposado if you want a smooth sipper that still works in a Margarita.
Is the Padre Azul bottle really ceramic?
Yes — it is a ceramic skull, hand-painted and finished individually.
